States will focus on achieving greater assistance to Haiti -- “going from
words to deeds” – as well as greater collaboration in the effort against drug
trafficking, as part of the current topics that the organizers have traditionally
presented in their encounters with U. S. State Department officials. In the
eighteenth version of the Dominican Week in the United States, its leadership
will continue depicting a comprehensive vision of the country, including the
development reached by the diaspora in New York City, and above all, the country’s
effective action in response to the disaster which occurred in Haiti, revealed
Ellis Pérez, Vice-President of the Dominican Week in the United States, and
Pedro Díaz Ballester.
“We will make it a point that we
must go from words to deeds, that the contributions must leave the conference
rooms and begin to arrive, that promises begin to materialize in the form of deliveries.
We are going to insist that the promised aid be given and will emphasize the
effective action taken by the Dominican Republic beginning the very night of
the tragedy,” said Pérez. He and Díaz Ballester participated in the encounter

HOY.- A ceremony was held to honor author Junot Díaz, winner of the
Pulitzer prize, and Rhina Espaillat, a notable poet. Juniot Díaz expressed his
appreciation for the act dedicated to him by the organizers of the Dominican
Week in United States, as well as to the eminent Dominican intellectual Rhina
Espaillat, who some years ago received the T.S. Eliot prize for poetry. The
ceremony, presided by Dr. Luis Heredia Bonetti, took place at the Dominican
Embassy in Washington. Also in attendance was historian Frank Moya Pons.
The renowned author Junot Diaz, Pulitzer prize in literature, and
Rhina Espaillat, T.S. Eliot prize in poetry, were honored by the Dominican Week
and Embassy of the D.R. in the United States, in a moving ceremony in which the
warmth and love for the land prevailed.
Rhina Espaillat stressed her love for the Dominican Republic, which she says she always shows in her poetry. “For 71 years I have had
a long absence from our country”, she expressed.

Well
deserved tribute
EL NACIONAL.- Junot Díaz and Rhina
Espaillat are two Dominicans in the United States who have obtained the highest
merits in literature. Diaz, is recipient of the prestigious Pulitzer prize and
Espaillat of the T.S. Eliot for poetry. For their achievements in the United States, they were exalted as icons of the hard-working Dominican community in there.
The organizers of the Dominican Week, presided by Luis Heredia Bonetti, and the
Embassy in Washington exalted them as values that strengthen national pride, in
addition to sources of inspiration for development. It is a just tribute to
two intellectuals who elevate the Dominican flag to the higher level of
thought. Dominicans in the United States have left their imprint in sports like
baseball and basketball, in business, music, in medicine, and -- since some
time back -- they have achieved important political offices. But culture,
despite its inappreciable value is not, for many reasons, a terrain that is
easily explored. Diaz and Espaillat deserved to be honored for the merits
achieved with their great cultural work.

DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, Oct. 1 (UPI) – Economic
growth will decelerate in the second half of the year and will slowly recover

greater depreciation of the peso in 2011 and the interest rates will gradually
increase. These projections were made by economist Bernardo Fuentes as part of
a panel organized by the group of Dominican Professionals in Wall Street, in
the context of the XVIII Dominican Week in the United States.
